How was 2018 for you?
Nihil Young (Less Hate): 2018 felt like a new beginning. There were many highs and lows as usual, but apart from the scarcity of creative time to spend in the studio due to several issues, I really can’t complain at all.
I have had some good releases out this year on Toolroom Records, both solo and with my good friend Marii (from The Saunderson Brothers). They did well and charted and were played by a few top acts, which is good.
I received 1 million streams on Spotify with a crossover deep house vocal tune titled “Align” with Wolf Story and Gathier on Mike Mago’s Bmkltsch Rcrds, which I wasn’t expecting at all given the fact that the song was completely different from anything I was already producing and the style the label was releasing too. So I feel that’s a great result and feel somewhat rewarded for pushing outside of my comfort zone to come up with something that sounded different and unique.
I was also asked to remix Mike Mago and Dog Collective’s “Always on my Mind” for Spinnin’ Records. That was an un expected surprise. I’m very happy with how the remix turned out and it will be released in early 2019.
A few health issues that I already knew of and new ones added to the plate (literally), which is always a bummer. And sadly I wasn’t able to be as focused and productive as I usually would have been. I’ve not played so many shows either, but the few ones I did were excellent!
Song of the year?
Ben Böhmer – After Earth
What’s your New Year’s resolution?
To focus more on myself and my own music as I’ve never had enough time to do it being always so busy with the labels. (I run Frequenza and the studio all by myself.) I plan to spend more time in the studio for my own productions and hopefully I’ll even find some time to build a nice live show setup too. I’m definitely going to do more gigs in 2019 and also hope to get Frequenza doing more label nights across Europe and overseas.
