Gear Review: Subjekt Block Party Headphones

Today everyone aspires in one way or another to be a DJ, and with the pole shift to digital in its final phase, now most people can afford to be one too. In the past you had to spend hundreds of dollars to get your ears in the mix, and with the release of these Block Party Headphones from Subjekt, you can get mixing for a third of the cost of some other DJ specific headphones out there.

Quickly accessing these headphones they just look like another pair of skateboard-thug ear covers; however if you drop these on your dome you will soon realize that these were actually build to bring the bass! Delivering a whopping 57mm driver, these are almost a centimeter bigger than the 800-dollar headphone I mix down studio productions on. The sound is decent — not the best I’ve heard — but perhaps the best I have heard in a sub hundred dollar DJ headphone offering. The bass is huge and will project over a large system, yet the mids lack a bit of color for just casual listening. The chassis is crafted from some sort of resin-molded plastic which leaves for a cheap IKEA-kind of construction, however the attached cable seems thick and durable for all the times the headphones get yanked in and out of their storage bag. I would have liked to see the 1/4″ adapter threaded to fit on the 1/8” tip, but I can deal with that setback for the basic investment.

If you already have DJ apps on your iPad, have loads of downloaded electro-house on your hard drive, you are now just a quick purchase of these headphones away from rocking your next block party.
