Colette celebrates her birthday in Hollywood; Paris Hilton tries to crash
May 27th, 2008 | By admin | Category: Big Shot Magazine, Hot gossip, Live Reviews, US newsIn what has become something of a tradition, DJ Colette celebrated the passing of another year in her life with a gig for friends, family, and true fans at a small Hollywood club. On Monday night she played Nacional with fellow LA house DJ Jesse Brooks while her husband, actor and musician Thomas Ian Nicholas, and former Superjane cohort DJ Dayhota were on hand to celebrate.
Not long after midnight, however, the mood in the club shifted as Paris Hilton arrived through a side entrance, not only with her typical nightclub entourage, but with an MTV camera crew for the network’s new reality show, “Paris’ BFF.” In case you didn’t know (and if you don’t want to, skip to the next paragraph), the show follows Paris in her search for a new best friend. A throng of scantily-clad Nicole Richie wannabes stood idly with Paris on the club’s second floor before retreating to the Lincoln Nav stretch limo outside where they indulged in street vendor hot dogs we imagine they purged late.
For those not interested in seeing Paris hawk her muffins, Colette had her friends pass out birthday cupcakes on the downstairs dancefloor. In a set that acted as a sort of personal best-of, including hits from last year’s album, Push, as well as her debut, Hypnotized, and her 2006 House of Om compilation, the DJ was clearly happily celebrating oeuvre in a career-spanning couple of hours where the night’s few hundred revelers heard her deepest house and more recent harder, progressive beats.
For LA house heads, Colette’s birthday usually marks the official start of summer. This year it capped off a weekend of deep house magic. On Saturday Andy Caldwell and Julius Papp delivered rousing sets to a wildly inebriated crowd at the Wet pool party, brought back after a few years off and hosted for the first time at the Custom Hotel in Culver City. Sunday afternoon saw DJ Sneak regale a tight crowd at Elevate, Downtown LA’s new outdoor rooftop oasis. By the time Colette was spinning her birthday wax, it was a remarkably dedicated and full crowd that remained on the floor until 2am, undeterred by their own fatigue and the distractions of talentless media whores trying to pull focus. This is LA, after all.
