Album Review: Morgan Page / ‘Believe’ (Nettwerk)

When you score one of the world’s biggest house hits and a Grammy nomination, generally that’d be a career capstone and it’d be all downhill. But then, we can’t all be house hotshot Morgan Page. The Boston-bred, L.A.-based producer/DJ knows a good thing when he hears it so he’s stuck with vocalist Elisabeth Morris, the almost absurdly talented songstress who lent her heavenly voice to Page’s 2008 smash “The Longest Road.” Here, she chimes in on many of the album’s best tracks: the softly pulsing “Strange Condition,” the life-affirming title track and his latest hit single, “Fight for You.” OM Records’ house chanteuse Samantha James, meanwhile, is equally fabulous on the mid-tempo house anthem “Back to Life,” a perfect night starter at your favorite ultra-lounge. “Quicksand” vocalist Natalie Walker also appears, spilling her soul on the gorgeous, synth-driven “Only Human.”Page himself has said this one isn’t a full-on dance floor explosion but that’s not a bad thing. There’s plenty of time for club bangers — check out his slew of shit hot remixes or “The Longest Road,” for that matter. This time out, it’s a sexy, loungey vocal house affair, dripping with sultriness, digital soul, infectious beats and a decidedly pensive vibe. If he keeps going like this, there’s sure to be more accolades coming his way.
