Album Review: Emptyset / ‘Emptyset’ (Caravan)
Jan 27th, 2010 | By admin | Category: Big Shot Magazine, Music ReviewsWord on the street may be that minimal techno’s slow death by attrition has finally come to its agonizing end, but if the new long-player from the Bristol, UK duo known as Emptyset is anything to go on, minimalism-proper is still very much alive and well. Whereas their initial 12” singles packed as much punch as possible into a roiling techno format, primed and ready for maximum dance-floor impact, this full-length effort flits between rhythmic experiments that would make Alva Noto blush and the sort of stripped-back wares that Sleeparchive has built his reputation on. In short, nothing Emptyset has done to date is anywhere near as accomplished as this. It will no doubt take a special sort of DJ to blend this into their sets, but what we have here is proof positive that meaty, sonically challenging dance music is still very much a possibility in this day and age of Ableton presets and faceless producers.
