Single Review: Spor / “Conquerors & Commoners” (Lifted)

If there were ever a king of the filter in drum ‘n’ bass, it’s Spor. He has the uncanny ability to tweak the fuck out of filters to make some of the finest and most interesting neuro-funk today. This four-track EP showcases that particular sound in a myriad of ways. “Kaori” is spacious and menacing with a cinematic intro and technically edited breaks. “Halogen” is a foray into something that might be called blip and bass with its robotic and electro-ish bass workout. “Overdue” is a beautiful vocal track with a minimal break and a lush instrumental soundbed. My absolute favorite track on this EP, however, is “Kingdom,” which is a straight club banger with Spor’s signature bass tweaking mastery, sinister vibe, and massive drop. Love, love, love it.
