Dance music tends to be apolitical, but East Berlin-born DJ/producer Paul van Dyk has peppered themes of social justice into his music (see his Politics of Dancing compilations for reference), and he’s never been shy to speak his mind about the Iraq War and U.S. foreign policy. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall today, van Dyk, has penned “We Are One,” which will be presented during the “Festival Of Freedom” 20 Year Anniversary festivities at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. On Tuesday, the track will be available worldwide via iTunes.
Van Dyk will perform the song with vocalist Johnny McDaid of Vega 4 will perform “We Are One” in the presence of heads of state from all over the world at the historic celebration taking place at the German capitol landmark.
Obligatory press gush from PvD: “It is an incredible honor to be allowed to present my ‘We Are One’ anthem on November 9 against such a fantastic backdrop. The events of 20 ago still move me very personally. I have invested a lot of time and emotion in this project.”
