Album review: Applescal / ‘A Slave’s Commitment’ (Traum)
Nov 4th, 2009 | By admin | Category: Music ReviewsThere is no doubt that A Slave’s Commitment by the young Dutch producer Pascal Terstappen (a.k.a. Applescal) will be a strong contender for album of the year in those pesky year-end lists.
This kid is like a living, breathing, iPod channeler of the creative energy of a James Holden and running it through a Boards of Canada sequencer. The album is rich with actual tunes as well as the kind of creative sound engineering with lush ambient passages that make technophiles drool. In the “olden days” it would have taken 10-15 years of serious collecting to amass the sheer amount of musical influences Applescal mines on this album, but in the digital age now even a 21-year-old can sound like a venerable musical sage.
