Compilation review: ‘Chromeo: DJ-Kicks’ / (!K7)

Mixing Italo, disco, funk and soul near-classics, Chromeo’s entry in the DJ-Kicks series sounds nothing like Chromeo and everything like their awesome DJ sets.
Chromeo’s Dave 1 and P-Thugg describe these tracks as plentiful dollar-bin records that have been all but forgotten. Is it great to hear Donna Allen’s 1986 R&B hit “Serious” entering the popular conscience again? You bet. And Val Young’s “Seduction” is aging impressively well to boot. The overall mood is uplifting, and overall, there’s nothing here not to like. Chromeo supplements the mix with their own cover of the Eagles’ “I Can’t Tell You Why,”a new benchmark in sincere kitsch.
