Police Shut Down Minitek’s First Night, Festival Manages to Go On
Sep 15th, 2008 | By admin2 | Category: Big Shot Magazine, Live Reviews, US newsEven though Rudy Giuliani hasn’t been mayor for ages, city hall and the NYPD still don’t give a lot of love to those brave souls who promote underground music events. So it wasn’t surprising that the opening night of Minitek was marred by a cameo from the men in blue, who shut the party down around 2:30am. But people seemed to take it in stride: “Friday night as most of the net already knows was a bust. I won’t talk too much about that as I want things like this to happen more and don’t want to get too down on the promoters as im sure they are going to have to deal with a pretty big shitstorm with VIP ticket holders shouting at them for the next few weeks.”
The promoters were able to move the party to Rebel, where the party went off. The following day’s event at Coney Island (that’s in Brooklyn) was marred by rain and organizational confusion, and the music didn’t start until 2pm. After a few hours of drama, the music picked up as Audiofly, M.A.N.D.Y. and Tiefschwarz gave rousing performances. The subsequent event was moved to Studio B in Greenpoint, where Magda, Pan Pot and others played. Though it was filled with drama (some of which couldn’t be controlled), Minitek’s promoters were able to think on their feet. One wonders what might’ve been had so many obstacles not been thrown in their way.
